CTA Design Builders, Inc.: what do users think?

Sandra Jae: We had been looking for a design-build company in Seattle, that could handle all aspects of the remodel of our mid-century home, when we came upon CTA’s listing and liked their work. We wanted to start the process with a redesign of our master bedroom/ bathroom suite, with hopes of someday moving on to other parts of our house. We didn’t feel we had a large enough project to hire a large architectural firm, and had actually been turned down by one company when they heard it wasn’t a whole-house remodel. We hoped to find a ‘one-stop shop’ that could not only design the rooms, but hire and interact with the contractor, and help with interior design. After our initial meeting with Julie, we knew she would be great to work with. We just clicked. It was obvious she had years of experience under her belt, and would be someone who could easily guide us through the process. We immediately felt comfortable hiring her and her team for our job.The design process went very smoothly with a few meetings at CTA’s offices, where they made us feel right at home. We were given several layout options to choose from, and they were more than happy to make changes here and there within the design. Once we got closer to our final decisions, we were able to see 3D ‘walk-throughs” to help us envision how the rooms would look. As someone who agonizes over every decision, I was very appreciative of how patient Julie and Nicole were with me, and I never felt pressure to make a decision without some time to think it over.Julie found an excellent contractor for our project, who managed all the sub-contractors and did beautiful finish work. We all worked together, on items big and small, to resolve any design dilemmas that naturally came up along the way. Julie understood how important it was for us to maintain the integrity of the house while updating its layout and finishes. She came up with many ingenious ways to add special little design touches, while keeping everything simple and ‘zen.’Since we had the attention of the contractor, and Julie, an experienced architect on hand, we decided to move ahead with an additional project that truly needed attention in our home: new windows and sliding patio doors. Our home was designed in the ’60’s with beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows, with minimal framing, but they were single-paned: drafty in the winter and sweltering in the summer. We wanted to maintain the look of the original windows without adding the bulky window frames offered by most companies. We knew this would require a person who could think outside of the box and come up with a creative solution to the problem. We also wanted someone who would understand why we wanted to maintain the mid-century aesthetic of our windows. Julie and the contractor worked together to design new window sills that are built out just enough to hold double-paned glazing, without noticeable differences to the original design. We were also able to update our old aluminum sliding doors to much taller wood sliders that are absolutely stunning. The end result was just what we had hoped for. Now, everyday when I enter my bedroom and bathroom, I can hardly believe it is mine! I feel like I’ve moved into a luxury hotel suite with beautiful finishes and thoughtful design. After living in our new space for almost a year, I can’t find a single thing I would change. We are taking a breather from the remodeling process for now, but plan to use CTA’s services again when we move onto Phase 2! Followed by Phase 3!We highly recommend Julie and the team at CTA!

Matthew Lambek: .Julie is amazing and here’s why: she listens to what you want and truly invests herself in your design. She has great ideas and great taste. She’s a polite voice of reason and restraint when you inevitably push for a bad idea. She is flexible and accommodating after you explain that you couldn’t possibly live without this

Arlene Smith: there is just NO ROOM for everyone to fit in the tiny entry way. We consulted several other area architects and while they were nice and had great reputations, all of them wanted us to add a gable-style

Mark Shinstrom: We worked with CTA for a complete remodel of the MidCentury Modern house that I grew up in, so the stakes were high. We needed to honor the house but make it work for us, while keeping family members happy that we showed respect to the house in which they were raised. CTA did a fabulous job. Julie had great vision but was still flexible when we wanted to change things. The contracting side was a breeze - they showed up on time, did meticulous work and we never had a complaint from neighbors about cars, noise, or debris. We are really happy with the process and the result.

j t: As a licensed general contractor doing business with CTA, and as a former employee, I have high respect for Buzz and Julie. They are experienced, fair and above all, care about design and the quality of product handed over to the client. As a design professional, Julie Campbell is a strong advocate for her clients while steering them towards tasteful and yet modern design.

Paul Mitchell: We thoroughly enjoyed our collaboration with CTA. Everyone there was responsive, personable, and creative. Our project morphed during the process - growing and shrinking - until we got it just right. In the end we could not afford to do all we wanted, but will definitely engage them again when it comes time to launch phase two!

Grant Gladow: After seeing some of architect Julie Campbell and CTA's other residential projects, we decided this was who we wanted to help us design and renovate our home. We were not disappointed. Julie has a keen sense of design that's manifested in the big picture as well as the small details. Besides all the typical aspects of remodel work, we also sought her advice on light fixtures, furniture choices, artwork, landscape features, and other things. When we could have gone astray with some bad aesthetic decisions, she tactfully convinced us otherwise. We love the finished product! It's a very contemporary design, with a hint of Japanese influence, and includes beautiful natural materials that nurture our spirits.

Sallie Herling: We had an excellent experience with CTA. Julie designed a beautiful addition to the master bedroom along with a remodel of two bathrooms in 2013. Buzz's team did a great job creating the spaces that Julie designed. The firm was careful to follow the design style of the original architect resulting in a remodel that updated the rooms but was very cohesive with the whole house.

NCL Emerald City: CTA did a masterful job converting our 1950s Eastside rambler into a beautiful and livable family home. Using "Not So Big" techniques, Julie's design gave us everything on our wish list with only a 400 sq ft addition.Construction quality from Buzz's team is fantastic. The 6 month project was on budget and we couldn't be more happy with the results.

Shuler Architecture: what do users think?

Brad Ruppert: and turned it into a 3800 sq ft

Mitch Lacey: We have used Shuler Architecture for three or four different projects now, ranging from a simple garden shed design to a new house plan to a full house remodel. Mark is thorough, very up-to-date with current building codes for a variety of cities, and overall has a great ideas. He is timely in his work and follows through on what he says he will do. Overall we highly recommend Shuler Architecture!

Katia Blackburn: Mark is not only a highly creative architect but he also pays attention to -- and has deep knowledge of -- critical details like cost, zoning and permitting. He provides great customer service and really cares about his clients as he follows projects through from initial concept to completion of the finishing work. For me, Mark did an amazing job returning traditional Craftsman charm to the front of my 1908 bungalow, which had had all of its original character stripped away and flattened out in a 1950s remodel. He extended the roof to recreate an eve, added a deck with covered door entry and trellis, and replaced the awful aluminum windows that had been installed in the front wall with latticed, double-hung, wood windows that match the original windows in the rest of the house. I now have perfect strangers stopping by and asking me about the house and its history, and its curb appeal has jumped by 90 percent. I would refer anyone to Mark, whether they simply wanted consulting on a real estate purchase, drawings and builder recommendations for a remodel, or the creation of a large, beautiful new home. He can do it all, well.

Deepak Manohar: Positive:Professionalism,Quality,Responsiveness,ValueMark was a consultant for me in 2013. His work was professional and timely. He identified the opportunities to deliver my home improvement project with great quality and at a reasonable price.

Molly Olsen: and created a terrific design that had many smart features I would not have ever thought of. All the entrances are covered, for instance. We have 6' windows in the north-facing stairwell which bring in lots of light. And the lower level apartment he designed is stunning. We used an I-beam so we could have an open floor plan, with nine-foot ceilings and full-sized windows. You would never know it's a basement. It's nicer than the main level! Mark checked in on the project often while it was going on, whether I was there or not, and worked with the contractor directly, which was great. When we hit a big snag with drainage, he and the contractor worked on an affordable solution they then presented to me. I hope to do more projects with him soon -- he's already done some more designs for me, just need to find the $$ to execute them.

Andrea Sigler Castro: is exactly what the client desires AND will work well for their type of lifestyle. I have recommended him every time someone has asked for the name of an architect because I think so highly of Mark Shuler and the architectural work he does. You will NOT regret calling Mark and using his services.

Paul Vick: Working with Mark has consistently been a wonderful experience. He is extremely dedicated, always willing to go the extra mile to make sure that the client's experience is good and that they get the best possible results. The quality of his work is extremely high, and we've been extremely pleased with how our house turned out after major renovations! Highly recommended!

Duffy Ellis: Mark Shuler is an excellent architect who is very well rounded and well versed with all aspects residential architecture. In addition to his architecture, he's experienced and well equipped to handle the array of issues you encounter on more complex projects that include Critical Areas and other land use type challenges.I'd recommend him to anybody.

JLD206: I connected with Mark in 2004 to design a major remodel on a fixer upper, starting at the foundation. He provided guidance and expertise every step of the way; sharing his knowledge with this curious first time homeowner. Mark made it possible to incorporate the features and aesthetic I hoped for while doubling the footprint and functional space. In 2018, Mark designed an efficient, well-purposed DADU/Garage on the same property as the '04 project. Mark has a knack for navigating the City code that allowed the project to move along smoothly from start to finish. Mark is an incredible resource and he is always willing to lend a hand or direct you to someone he knows that can best help. It was a treat to work together again, not only with Mark but the same contractor as well.

Michelle Pirkl: Positive:Professionalism,Quality,Responsiveness,ValueMark Shuler was a consultant for me on several occasions in 2013 for two townhouse repair projects. Not only did he recognize and explain the construction defects but he referred me to the appropriate professionals to repair them.

Skip Dise: . We selected Shuler for the following reasons: -Shuler did an excellent job in the pre-sale cycle of creating a vision of what our home project could achieve, taking into consideration our style, goals and budget. -Shuler did the best job of the three bids we received in then taking this vision and laying out how the project gets completed, including descriptions of the contractors with which Shuler has excellent relationships. This was a major differentiator for us, as the other two bids were very lacking in this need. During the design process, Shuler managed our project excellently. We met with Shuler a number of times at the project site, going through about 5 different project iterations until a final design was achieved. Shuler walked us through our expected costs and how they related to the design, which made it easier for us to understand the impacts of asking for more or less on the final project. Lastly, Shuler handled a very difficult permitting process with the City of Kirkland, making sure our project had all of the necessary elements of safety, but none of the unnecessary hassle that has come to be the city's permitting process. I would recommend Shuler for any type of comparable remodel, based on excellence in design, project management and exceeding customer expectations.

Pasko Kesovija: I have worked with Mark Shuler on various residential projects throughout the Puget Sound area. The projects ranged from small remodel to new high end residential construction. From engineering prospective, Mark’s projects always bring fresh, innovative views, requiring higher level of the engineering design. However, Mark’s extensive knowledge of engineering aspect of residential construction separates him from other professionals in the industry I have worked with, and makes him an outstanding individual to work with. His willingness to listen and always welcoming attitude to new ideas in a problem solving process as well as his high energy personality makes working with him always worthwhile and enjoyable.

Eric Liljegren: Mark Shuler is an expert navigator of the Seattle DCI permitting and project management labrynth, and was an essential partner in establishing use for the record for a small apartment we own in Seattle. He is responsive, professional and a good value - I would never attempt a permitted construction or remodel project in Seattle without him. I recommend Shuler Architecture without reservations!

Charles Bofferding: Mark provided designs for an extensive full first floor remodel. He provided insights and inspiration to turn our dated mid century house into a wonderful place for our large family to gather and my wife and I to live the rest of our lives. Mark brought experience, insights, and innovative designs that delighted us and opened possibilities we only imagined with the space.

Norman: Positive:Professionalism
