Emily Esposito Fulkerson: I can't recommend Bret and The Phinery enough. We wanted to give our home a refresh -- not a full remodel, but upgrades like redoing our fireplace, new paint/countertops/tile/mirrors for our bathrooms, wallpaper accent wall in the primary bedroom. We can do a lot of things DIY and wanted someone who could help us create a cohesive vision and help us with colors, design direction, and execution. Bret did all of that and more. Her passion for design is contagious and her taste is exquisite. She very quickly understand our design aesthetic, needs, and limitations, and had amazing ideas. Bradford Hamilton: How many shades of white are there & how can this color change my home's interior? You realize white creates environmental mysteries in each tone, but the decoding and solutions were solved by having a Color Consultation by The Phinery. Ashley walked through my condo inquiring about space utilization and what I wanted to highlight or diminish in each room. She understood how my artwork was integral in each room & explained how selecting a white with warm undertones & incorporating various paint sheens would achieve a more elevated look. Mission accomplished! Art & furniture now appear crisp and fresh. Colors in paintings appear brighter, and even furniture shapes have become highlighted. The overall result is a stunning space to spend time in.

Mark Oberpriller: While working with the Phinery to refresh our interior space we enlisted the help of Ashley Wolf to guide us in updating the exterior. Ashley was indispensable in helping us determine a paint color pallet. She also defined the color breakup to simplify and update the exterior. Between the soffits, walls, trim, belly bands, porch, deck, doors, steps, etc, it gets complicated quickly. At first you may think the suggestions are subtle but WOW do they make a difference! Sarah Smith: I've worked with Spade and Archer on several of my listings now, and they are consistently fantastic. Of the several stagers I've hired, they are one of VERY few where I can confidently schedule photography the very next day because I know I won't need to "fix" their work. They go the extra mile on things like putting lamps on timers, leaving the floors as clean as when they arrived, and do not use inflatable mattresses that lead to extra work later. Justin is always very accommodating and responsive to my questions, vastly exceeding expectations. It's not a coincidence that every S&A-staged listing I've had has sold quickly with multiple offers.

We had our own builder, however the real value was clear in assisting us in picking out colors and finishes. What was really great is how they were able to streamline the process to give us the help we needed. We were fairly comfortable navigating with our builder and his sub contractors, however what ES provided was a huge comfort level as we chose paint, stains, hardwoods, carpets, doors, hardware, lighting and the list goes on. Trust me , this can be an intimidating task. We chose several options in all categories directly with the vendors and then bounced everything off Sherri to make sure we were not jumping off a cliff. In doing so, I felt as though it would bring a feeling of relief with not seeing clutter and things now having a home.I have tried doing this myself before, but I simply got overwhelmed and nothing was getting done.First and foremost, both Sherri and John were great to work with! They definitely keep focused, and the results are observed immediately. They definitely helped me in every organizational area that I struggled with, especially with respect to kitchen organization, getting rid of unneeded items, and filing paperwork in my office. Mitch Lacey: We have used Shuler Architecture for three or four different projects now, ranging from a simple garden shed design to a new house plan to a full house remodel. Mark is thorough, very up-to-date with current building codes for a variety of cities, and overall has a great ideas. He is timely in his work and follows through on what he says he will do. Overall we highly recommend Shuler Architecture!
Katia Blackburn: Mark is not only a highly creative architect but he also pays attention to -- and has deep knowledge of -- critical details like cost, zoning and permitting. He provides great customer service and really cares about his clients as he follows projects through from initial concept to completion of the finishing work. For me, Mark did an amazing job returning traditional Craftsman charm to the front of my 1908 bungalow, which had had all of its original character stripped away and flattened out in a 1950s remodel. He extended the roof to recreate an eve, added a deck with covered door entry and trellis, and replaced the awful aluminum windows that had been installed in the front wall with latticed, double-hung, wood windows that match the original windows in the rest of the house. I now have perfect strangers stopping by and asking me about the house and its history, and its curb appeal has jumped by 90 percent. I would refer anyone to Mark, whether they simply wanted consulting on a real estate purchase, drawings and builder recommendations for a remodel, or the creation of a large, beautiful new home. He can do it all, well.

Molly Olsen: and created a terrific design that had many smart features I would not have ever thought of. All the entrances are covered, for instance. We have 6' windows in the north-facing stairwell which bring in lots of light. And the lower level apartment he designed is stunning. We used an I-beam so we could have an open floor plan, with nine-foot ceilings and full-sized windows. You would never know it's a basement. It's nicer than the main level! Mark checked in on the project often while it was going on, whether I was there or not, and worked with the contractor directly, which was great. When we hit a big snag with drainage, he and the contractor worked on an affordable solution they then presented to me. I hope to do more projects with him soon -- he's already done some more designs for me, just need to find the $$ to execute them.

He provided guidance and expertise every step of the way; sharing his knowledge with this curious first time homeowner. Mark made it possible to incorporate the features and aesthetic I hoped for while doubling the footprint and functional space.In 2018, Mark designed an efficient, well-purposed DADU/Garage on the same property as the '04 project. Mark has a knack for navigating the City code that allowed the project to move along smoothly from start to finish. We selected Shuler for the following reasons: -Shuler did an excellent job in the pre-sale cycle of creating a vision of what our home project could achieve, taking into consideration our style, goals and budget. -Shuler did the best job of the three bids we received in then taking this vision and laying out how the project gets completed, including descriptions of the contractors with which Shuler has excellent relationships. This was a major differentiator for us, as the other two bids were very lacking in this need. During the design process, Shuler managed our project excellently. We met with Shuler a number of times at the project site, going through about 5 different project iterations until a final design was achieved. Shuler walked us through our expected costs and how they related to the design, which made it easier for us to understand the impacts of asking for more or less on the final project. Lastly, Shuler handled a very difficult permitting process with the City of Kirkland, making sure our project had all of the necessary elements of safety, but none of the unnecessary hassle that has come to be the city's permitting process. I would recommend Shuler for any type of comparable remodel, based on excellence in design, project management and exceeding customer expectations.

From engineering prospective, Mark’s projects always bring fresh, innovative views, requiring higher level of the engineering design.
